On July 14th, SUNY Downstate Medical College at Long Island College Hospital (LICH), in collaboration with Central Brooklyn Cancer Service Program (CSP), Greenpoint Diagnostic Imaging and Par Care Health & Medical Center, presented an open health forum on cancer (cervical, breast and colon) at Pete McGuiness Senior Center (715 Leonard Street). More than seventy seniors came to ask questions about signs, symptoms and risk prevention.
The key speaker at the forum was Dr. Mary Fatehi, Assistant Professor & Director of Gynecologic Oncology at SUNYDownstate Medical Center at LICH. Guest speaker Sandra McDonald of CSP provided information about free cancer screenings for the uninsured offered by Par Care and Greenpoint Diagnostic, who were represented at the event by Medical Director Dr. Michael Carlin.
Under the terms of the program, uninsured individuals first undergo OBGYN and clinical breast examinations at Par Care and are then referred to Greenpoint Diagnostic for mammograms. Colonoscopies are provided to high-risk patients for colon cancer. “It is a wonderful partnership that provides the highest quality of care to underserved community residents on a local level” said Carol DeLillo of Greenpoint Diagnostic Imaging.
CSP and Greenpoint Diagnostic also plan to offer free cancer screenings, in Bushwick, where the number of uninsured residents remains very high.
